What is a Credit Card Joining Fee?

A joining fee (also called a one-time fee) is a charge you pay when you first get a credit card. It’s different from the annual fee, which is charged every year.

Fee TypeWhen ChargedTypical Range
Joining FeeOnce, at card issuanceRs. 0 — Rs. 10,000+
Annual FeeEvery yearRs. 0 — Rs. 10,000+

When is Paying a Joining Fee Worth It?

Worth it if:

  • Welcome benefits exceed the fee — Many premium cards offer welcome points worth 2-3x the joining fee
  • You’ll use the card heavily — High spenders recover the fee through rewards quickly
  • Lounge access matters — A Rs. 2,000 fee for unlimited lounge access saves money vs paying per visit

Not worth it if:

  • You’re trying the card out — Don’t pay a fee for a card you might not keep
  • Low spending — If your monthly spend is under Rs. 15,000, stick to no-fee cards
  • Similar free alternatives exist — Compare with zero-fee cards offering similar benefits

How to Get Joining Fees Waived

  1. Ask at application — Many bank executives can waive fees, especially if you have a good CIBIL score (750+)
  2. Salary account holders — Banks often waive fees for existing salary account customers
  3. Relationship value — If you hold FDs or other products with the bank, negotiate
  4. Retention offers — Call the bank and express intent to cancel; they often waive upcoming fees

Cards With No Joining Fee

Several excellent cards come with zero joining fee:

  • HDFC MoneyBack+ — No joining fee, 2% cashback
  • SBI SimplyCLICK — Rs. 499 annual fee but no joining fee
  • Axis MyZone — No joining fee, good dining benefits
  • Amazon Pay ICICI — Lifetime free, 5% on Amazon with Prime

Always read the terms carefully. Some “lifetime free” cards have conditions like minimum annual spend to maintain the free status.
